Based on the link, I suspected long ago that Taishan and Putian where in some way related because both communities have a sound(s) similar to the Welsh "ɬ" or German "Schl-" initial sometimes sounding like "Shl-" to the untrained ear the further west one travels away from Taicheng City to Haiphong Vietnam which I have also heard both initials in Cambodia by local Khmers. Putian dialect like Taishanese is also unintelligible by its surrounding neighbors. Based on the link, I can substantiate that quite a few words and surnames that are pronounced in Taishanese also resembles Hokkien pronunciation but I believe that another layer of Central Plains Chinese accent has been absorbed locally and is derived from a wave of refugees fleeing the Bianjing massacre from the Jin-Song wars.
